In November, we will be going to see Blackadder II and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. Saturday, 2nd November at 2.30pm Blackadder II. Join us in an evening of hilarity and nostalgia as Edmund Blackadder, Baldrick and Percy will be joined by all your favourite characters in four episodes of Blackadder II: Beer, Money, Bells and Head, live on the Merlin stage. Blackadder, Blackadder! A bit like Robin Hood, Blackadder, Blackadder! But nothing like as good. Blackadder, Blackadder! I thought that he had died, Blackadder, Blackadder! Our writers must have lied! Tickets cost £14.00 Thursday, 21st November at 7.30pm The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. This was the book that “won the 1945 election for Labour” said Alan Sillitoe; the book that George Orwell said “everyone should read”. It is the story of a group of painters and decorators working in Edwardian England, living in near poverty, exploited by the wealthy owners, struggling to earn enough to have the “necessities of life”. Our production is Stephen Lowe’s adaptation for Joint Stock. We watch the painters as they transform the Mayor’s house; listen to their stories, their arguments and we follow them in their journey towards a new understanding. We join them at their annual “Beano”: the summer outing when once a year they get to relax and enjoy themselves. It is a play told through humour and wit and the hymns and the Music Hall songs of the era and the portrayal of the grimness of their world. A world that, sadly, hasn’t changed nearly enough. Come and join us, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, and change the World. Tickets cost £14.00 The Merlin has started to add 2025 productions to its web site. The ones that I think look interesting are: Thursday 20th February 2025 at 7.00pm. NT Live - The Importance of being Earnest A trivial comedy for serious people, filmed live from the National Theatre. Three-time Olivier Award-winner Sharon D Clarke is joined by Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who, Sex Education) in this joyful re-imagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy. While assuming the role of a dutiful guardian in the country, Jack lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy adopts a similar facade. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves caught in a web of lies they must carefully navigate. Max Webster (Life of Pi) directs this hilarious story of identity, impersonation and romance, filmed live from the National Theatre in London. Tickets cost £18.00. There will be a list for this at the November and December meetings and I will be collecting payment at the January meeting. Sunday 6th April 2025 at 2.00pm. Royal Opera Cinema Season - Turandot The beautiful but icy Princess Turandot will only marry a man who can correctly answer three riddles. Those who fail are brutally beheaded. But when an unknown prince arrives, the balance of power in Turandot’s court is forever shaken, as the mysterious stranger does what no other has been able to. Tickets cost £18.00. There will be a list for this at the January meeting and I will be collecting payment at the February meeting. Sunday 18th May 2025 at 2.00pm. Royal Opera Cinema Season - Die Walkure On a stormy night, fate brings two strangers together, unleashing a love with the power to end worlds. Meanwhile, in the realm of the gods, an epic battle ensues between their ruler Wotan and his rebellious daughter, Brünnhilde. Tickets cost £18.00. There will be a list for this at the March meeting and I will be collecting payment at the April meeting. I will keep watching both the Merlin and Memorial Theatres websites and may add other productions. Thank you all for your support this year.
